How Does a Smart Home Work?

With each passing year, smart home automation is growing in popularity. Don’t believe it? Check out this statistic:

The global smart home market is forecast to reach a value of more than 53 billion U.S. dollars by 2022.

If you’re interested in turning your traditional home into a smart home, it’s important to have a clear understanding of how the technology works.

What is Z-Wave?

Many manufacturers use Z-Wave for wireless applications, such as those associated with door looks, security systems, and smoke detectors.

While Z-Wave technology may be where everything starts, it’s not “smart” on its own. This is where remote programming and monitoring come into play.

In a smart home, devices are connected to a network, thus allowing you to control them remotely, such as via your smartphone.

Types of Wireless Protocols for Smart Homes

We’ve already discussed the basics of Z-Wave, but there are many other types of wireless protocols for smart homes:

  • Bluetooth: This is one of the most popular choices in a home automation environment, due to consumer familiarity and the fact that many devices already have Bluetooth capabilities.
  • Wi-Fi: It’s safe to say you know a thing or two about Wi-Fi, as this allows you to connect your tablet, smartphone, and computer to the internet (all without the need for a cord). Many home automation setups require Wi-Fi, so it’s a good idea to have this in place before installation.
  • ZigBee: In short, the ZigBee protocol works in the 915 MHz band and was developed primarily for mesh networking. This gives your devices the ability to communicate over multiple channels.
